Finding Freedom

Introductions; If you ask most people what freedom is they will say something like:

  • “Being able to do what I like”
  • “Go wherever I like”
  • "Eat, drink and say what I like: this is freedom”
  • “Having no one telling me what to do: that’s freedom“

The last two were very popular definitions of freedom with the inmates when I worked as a prison officer.

If you go on the internet you can find many quotes about freedom, but are they right?

Were the inmates right? Are the quotes completely right? I think not.

From what I have seen not one of them have come close to explaining the truth of freedom.

And as we have all no doubt heard, The truth will set you free

Did you know that when you know this truth you can be free even if your in prison!

Freedom as the world sells it to us is a lie..

Here is a snapshot of what the bible says about freedom:

17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

  2 Corinthians 3:17

Straight away a hard hitting verse, but can you see what it is really saying?

Where the spirit of God is there is freedom, we can work backwards from this statement and you have another truth “where the Lord isn’t, there is no freedom”.

You may be thinking you feel free, but without God you are not, you cannot be truly free; why?

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbour as yourself.”
Galatians 5: 13 – 14

This freedom lark is starting to look a little harder than we first thought, We have been called to be free!

We can choose to do anything we like, however if we did that how can we possibly love our neighbour as we love ourselves as our default action is to please self rather than others. Not everything we choose is for our benefit.

It is impossible when we are solely fulfilling our needs. We are called to love our neighbour as we love ourself.

If we are serving self, we are serving no one else..

We can do whatever we like, but if we become a slave to our own needs and so lose freedom; why?

23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.
24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

1 Corinthians 10 v 23 - 24

Without submitting ourselves to God’s will we follow only what we want or what the world says we need.

We all have free will, if we do not give it up to God; if we do not freely chose to let God rule our lives we become ruled by it.

We all have this issue, it is not just a few extreme examples but everyone!

Where is the freedom in being ruled by our weight, height, income, promotion, family, tradition, Xbox, mobile phone, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, housing, exam results. Not forgetting Drink, drugs, gambling and all the other addictive things out there.

Without God’s rule in your life you are being ruled by your own wants, needs and desires.

NOTHING in the above list, not one thing can set you free..

Only God can set you free, Why?

36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:36

Freedom in God is achieved by submitting to God; the world we live in hates that truth, but the bible is clear on who rules this world.

4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe.
They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News.
They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

2 Corinthians 4:4 (NLT)

We have been freed In Christ for a reason, every single one of us has a purpose In Christ.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2:9

We are all ministers, we all have a ministry. Nothing gets in the way of the commission given to all of us.

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  Matthew 28 19:20

Not some of us, not only the adults or the church leaders; all of us!

So what is this truth that will set us free?

Freedom is found in God and God alone, everything else is an imitation a fake.

Once we have been set free then we can start doing Gods will; helping others discover the truth of what we can be in Christ.

The thing is we can be in Christ, saved, have the right to freedom and still be a slave; why? When we choose to live like we have not met Christ, we are ruling in our lives, not him..

As I have mentioned before, believing in Jesus, his godliness, is not the same as submitting your life to him and following. Satan and all his demons believe in Jesus and his godliness, no one could say they follow Jesus or have submitted to God!

We must submit to Christ then, choose everyday to live like it to gain true freedom. Any other way of living life is a lie, you are not free.

Outside of a total submission to Christ’s rule in our heads and hearts as the bible asks; you are a slave to something else, we all are.
