Faith of the Foolish

Just a short study, actually more of an encouragement than a study. The following scripture is very powerful and packed full of truth. We need to hear if we are struggling following Jesus in a world that is set against him.

26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.
27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.
28 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important.
29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.
31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (NLT)

How many times have friends and colleagues looked at you in disbelief when you have made the statement “I believe in Jesus?”

Or maybe knowing the reaction you will get you choose to keep quiet? Maybe they have much cleverer answers than you or maybe they make you feel small and silly for believing something so stupid.

After all;

  • Hasn’t science proved there is no God?
  • Hasn’t it been proved that Jesus didn’t exist?
  • Hasn’t the bible been proved to be false in its accounts full of lies.

The answer is an emphatic no to all of the above and nearly every other argument that can be mustered against faith in Jesus.

In the above passage we have the apostle Paul dealing very powerfully with this mindset we as believers will come up against.

The first three verses sum up the truth of it.

I was once of the belief that Christianity was for the weak, broken or people unable to cope with things so they have to believe in a made up story to find strength. Twenty years later I believe that we are weak, broken people without it.

So that through waking up to the truth of the reality in the bible; God is real, Jesus is real, He really did live and He really died for me. Those broken, weak people become the most wise and the most complete people on Earth.

Why?

Because belief in Jesus is wisdom.

It is how God works.

He calls on the weak, the rejected and those that society looks down on or have poor character.

  • Abraham was a liar and a flawed broken man called by God
  • Jacob was a deceiver, manipulator and a flawed man called by God
  • Moses was a murderer and doubter called by God
  • Gideon a coward called for a purpose by God
  • Paul was a persecutor called by God

This list could have many, many more in it. God works this way and He always will.

Jesus was born in culturally unacceptable circumstances, to an oppressed people group, to a family with no social standing in a town in the middle of nowhere. As a child He was a refugee.

As an adult Jesus was homeless, living off what people gave. He never rose to high office or had any social standing or wealth. Yet He was God living among us! The most human of all human beings. the most powerful of men to have ever lived!

How foolish to not have him born in a royal family somewhere?

In all of us at Cornerstone and in the wider Christian world. God has chosen us: The weak, addicted, depressed, scared, broken, down trodden and rejected people; to be the light he shines through! To be the ambassadors of the only wisdom that counts, the only knowledge that has eternal meaning.

Why does He do that?

The last three verses explain it well:

29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.
31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”

Everything that is good and right in me is from Christ Jesus, I will forever boast in that truth. I will boast about His changing love and His saving grace.

There is not an intelligent argument, there is no wisdom that can stand against that truth.

All you have to do to be the wisest on earth is to believe in the truth of Jesus.

You do not need a degree, or to attend bible college. All these things are great and helpful but they are not needed to make you wise; all you need for that is belief. They are not needed to make you successful or a powerful witness for God.

You need no qualification to show Gods love, forgiveness, grace or mercy; just faith in Jesus.

You can have no money, no home (like Jesus) and be among the wisest in the world because of your faith in Jesus.

This is why the world and the power in it comes after you. The world does not understand you, the enemy understands you perfectly and wants nothing more than to stop you.

He cannot stop you or any of us.

We have been made right with God, repenting and receiving forgiveness for our sins, now it is for us to share the wisdom of God with everyone we can.

Some people will not like the challenge to there material world view. Some people are just waiting to hear it.

So brothers and sisters do not let anyone tell you that you are foolish for believing, or you can’t achieve what you want to achieve.

In Christ Jesus we have perfect wisdom. In his will we have unstoppable power, if the world thinks me foolish I am happy to be a fool!
